A fresh look at NZ English teaching resources

A fresh look at NZ English teaching resources

Louise Swart

Julie and Sue attended the New Zealand Association for the Teaching of English (NZATE) conference in Dunedin this July. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with English teachers from across the country. Many were eager to refresh their classroom resources and provided amazing feedback on our NZ English teaching materials, including our new English Learning Guides.

At LearnWell, we understand the importance of high-quality NZ English teaching resources. We know you’re busy creating lesson plans, marking assessments, and supporting students. Meeting diverse needs in one class is challenging. That’s why we’ve created resources to boost engagement and achievement, designed specifically for the NZ curriculum.

While it’s an essential part of reflective practice, finding time to evaluate your current resources can be difficult. Take a moment to consider whether those 'old friends' still support your teaching goals. Embrace the opportunity to explore new options that can keep your teaching vibrant and engaging for your students. You might even discover new ways to grow your knowledge and skills as an educator.

How our NZ English teaching resources can help

If it’s time to review your English teaching resources, let us lighten your load. We’re here to help you find the right materials to support your teaching.

Learning Guides and LearnWell Digital

Learning Guides and LearnWell Digital resources are our most recently developed resources. The two align, allowing you to mix and match print and digital options to suit your needs or those of your students.

Learning Guides are designed for independent learning, providing a clear, connected journey through the material. They ensure a great experience whether whether working independently or with teacher guidance, offering flexibility for everyone. LearnWell Digital resources complement these benefits, guiding students on their own learning journeys. With our additional digital tools, you can easily track progress and personalise feedback and support.

LearnWell’s Learning Guides and Digital resources equip students with essential English skills. They provide key background knowledge and offer numerous opportunities for practice, improvement and self-evaluation with comprehensive feedback. Both resources include extensive glossaries with pronunciation guides to enhance general vocabulary and subject-specific terminology.

Additionally, our new resources for Creative Writing Skills, Formal Writing Skills, and Visual Language Skills are designed around project-based learning. Students create and complete their own pieces of work with carefully scaffolded learning and tasks along the way. The resources also include self-check tools to help students evaluate their work and stay organised while making films or writing projects.

So if you’re wanting some fresh options for English teaching resources, these might be just what you’re looking for.

Start Right Workbooks

We also offer Start Right Workbooks, designed for students at Levels 1-4 of the New Zealand Curriculum. Their simple, colourful, write-on format makes them easy to follow. While aimed at Year 1-8 students, many teachers also use them with secondary students who have learning gaps.

“I will be using Start Right Workbooks along with a teacher aide to help students that are currently struggling with their learning and have severe gaps in their learning. All of the boys identified will have their own IEP (Individual Education Plan).”

Director of Learning Support, Hamilton Boys’ High School

The Punctuation, Creative Writing and Handwriting titles from the Start Right Workbook series are popular NZ English teaching resources for secondary teachers, too.

Learning Workbooks and Study Guides

Then there are always the tried-and-true staples, Learning Workbooks and Study Guides.

Learning Workbooks feature clear, concise theory paired with plenty of examples and activities for students to complete directly in the books. They cover full year levels and individual NCEA achievement standards.

Study Guides are compact A5 textbooks filled with clear notes, worked examples, and activities. Use them all year to support classroom work, assist with internal assessments, or prepare for end-of-year exams.
