What you'll learn

Knowing how organisations set the prices of their goods and services can help us understand why we get charged the prices we do. If you're involved in pricing a good or service in the future, you'll be able to use what you learn in this resource to set the right price to generate higher revenue and profits.

This resource is divided into 4 parts:

1. Marketing and price | Te utu, me te mahi whakatairanga

In this section, you’ll learn about the relationship between marketing and setting the price for products. This includes learning about the 4 Ps of marketing, how to perform market research, what a target market is, and how organisations compete using price and non-price competition and different pricing strategies.

2. Demand, supply and price | Te utu, te popono me te whakarato

In this section, you’ll look at the relationship between supply and demand and the price of products. You’ll learn about the concept of a market and the economic model – supply and demand and how this influences the way organisations price their goods and services.

3. Financial information and price | Ngā mōhiohio ahumoni me te utu

In this section, you’ll learn how financial information helps organisations price their products. You’ll learn to analyse financial information using cost, volume and profit analysis. You’ll also learn how to prepare Projected Income Statements, and read Statements of Financial Position.

4. Putting it all together | Hei mahi i te katoa

Here, you’ll have the opportunity to use everything you’ve learnt and practise deciding the price an organisation should charge for its products.

Throughout this resource, you’ll see how mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) can offer unique insights into how organisations set the prices of their goods and services.
