This resource covers the things you need to know and be able to do for the Material World topic of Year 9 Science.
Matter in all its varied forms and the way it can change both physically and chemically is at the heart of the 'Chemical World'.
What you'll learn
In this resource you'll work through four main sections:
1. Matter and physical change
In this section, we'll explore what matter is and what kind of physical changes it can undergo.
2. Chemical changes
In this section, we'll move on from physical changes to look at chemical changes.
3. Three common gases
In this section, we'll look specifically at three very common gases: hydrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. You'll learn more about their structure and properties, how they're produced and used, and how you can test for their presence.
4. Chemistry in everyday life
To finish this introduction to the material world, we'll focus on several specific applications of chemistry in ways that affect our everyday lives: crude oil and the petrochemical industry, polymers and plastics.
This course will give you a good grounding in the basic knowledge, language and skills you need to take forward to the Material World section of Year 10 Sciences, and then on to Years 11 to 13 when it's called Chemistry.
