Have you ever wondered how players in your favourite sport or video game work out their next moves? Or wanted to know if you're being told the truth when someone is trying to sell you a product? Statistics and probability are involved in these and many other things in your life.
Statistics is a part of mathematics that is all about collecting, studying and finding meaning in data. It uses data from events that happened in the past. Statistics is closely linked with probability – when we use data to predict the chance of events happening in the future.
This resource will help you learn all the things you need to know and be able to do for Year 10 Statistics and Probability.
What you’ll learn
This course has three different sections.
1. Statistical investigation
In the first section, you’ll plan and then carry out your own statistical investigation. You’ll work through each of the steps of the statistical enquiry cycle, collecting evidence to help you tell a story about a population.
2. Statistical literacy
Next, you’ll use what you know about the statistical enquiry cycle to ask good questions about other people’s investigations. You’ll test their claims about the data and hunt down any flaws in the way they’ve displayed the data.
3. Probability
In the final section, you’ll investigate situations that involve elements of chance. You will learn how to predict the likelihood of something happening—the probability. You’ll carry out some simple probability experiments and practise describing probabilities in different ways.
