This resource covers learning from NCEA Level 1 Science Achievement Standard 92047 (Physics, Earth and Space Science 1.4) Demonstrate understanding of a physical system using energy concepts.

What you'll learn

In this course we will look at several key energy concepts and explore the ways that they come together in our modern world.

This course is broken into four sections.

    1. Introducing energy concepts | Te kuhu i ngā āhuatanga pūngao.

This is your toolkit to help understand, describe and calculate energy interactions. We’ll look at force, work, energy and power – key concepts that help to explain the energy interactions happening all around us. And we’ll look closely at the term ‘physical systems’ – what are they and what does it look like when the elements within them interact and change?

    2. Mechanical energy | Pūngao mīhini.

Using examples of hydroelectricity and wind power, we’ll look closely at how forms of mechanical energy work to generate electrical energy.

    3. Electrical energy | Pūngao hiko.

Following on from the previous section, we’ll look at electrical energy. How do we use the energy that we generate for ourselves?

    4. Thermal energy | Pūngao ngāwhā.

In this section we’ll look at various ways that changes in thermal energy affect the world around us, and work through some activities applying this knowledge to real-world solutions.
